Create an easy way to geotag and share content that is already on Internet.
2. Is anyone doing something like this now and how is your project different? [30 words]
MyMaps or Crowdmap make information available on a map, but Meip-it will provide a geo-Tag to any piece of the media ecosystem and will enable geo-sharing.
3. Describe the network with which you intend to build or work. [50 words]
Meipi.org, the already existing platform, is being used by communities, advocacy groups, journalists, artistic collectives and urban planners to geotag information around a topic and a specific region. Meip-it will build on the existing community of users and will be used on other blogging and media platforms.
4. Why will it work? [100 words]
Meipi has been tested as a useful tool with more than 1,000 maps created and 4,000+ registered users. Meip-it will add a ‘meipi it’ button to the Internet, creating a geotagged layer of information to all the pieces of the media ecosystem (videos, news, blog posts).Different kinds of mashups and aggregators seem to be the way users are choosing to curate and redistribute content that is already on the web (storify, pinterest, tumblr). Meip-it will enable curation and spatial storytelling.
5. Who is working on it? [100 words]
Meipi is a community of developers, designers, and planners that have built and mantained meipi.org since 2007. Since the software became open source in 2010, an entire community has contributed with its work and support. Meip-it coordinators: Pablo Rey Mazón (Visiting Scientist, Center for Civic Media, MIT) and Alfonso Sánchez Uzábal (Developer and Researcher at Montera34).Meipi developers: Pablo and Alfonso both collaborate with the core developers from Meipi.com: Guillermo Álvaro Rey and Jorge Álvaro Rey from Lamboratory, Domenico Di Siena, @urbanohumano, and Francesco Cingoliani, @immaginoteca.
6. What part of the project have you already built? [100 words]
Currently, Meipi is-The cloud app which hosts all the maps created by different communities at meipi.org. Users can install plugins to add special features to their maps. -The open source software ready to install in a self hosting server: Meipi Open.-The community of users that uses both the cloud app and the open source software as a tool in their campaigns, workshops and projects.Meip-it will be built on the existing Meipi software.
7. How would you sustain the project after the funding expires? [50 words]
The funds will enable the creation of an open standard to share existing content on maps, so that other developers can use it for their own projects, and extend its uses. In the future, Meip-it will keep working with an expanded volunteer ecosystem, providing services like software customization, and benefiting with community donations.
